Mentor-Friends and Heroes

In 1971 at age 17, I fell head over heels in love with the front-cover photo of Barry Stevens on her book called Don't Push the River (It Flows by Itself). I mark that day as the day I officially began "working on myself."

Don't Push the River introduced me to the work of Fritz Perls and Gestalt Therapy, which led me to bioenergetics and breath work, which led me to countless other healing modalities and spiritual disciplines over the years.

Since 1971, numerous friends, mentors, healers, teachers, and heroes have influenced me and my work. I am grateful to each and every one.

If I named them all, I could easily devote an entire Web site to these special people. However, since that's not practical, I've selected a few of my favorites to share with you here.

Ihaleakala Hew Len

Michael Harner

Christiane Northrup, M.D.

Ram Dass

Kenyth Freeman

Andrew Vachss

Longtime teacher of Ho'oponopono, Ihaleakala Hew Len is my single most important mentor about 100% responsibility and true self-care.

With my favorite shaman, Michael Harner (Esalen 1992).

Brilliant and beautiful, compassionate and courageous, Christiane Northrup, M.D. is one of my favorite female heroes and a precious "fairy godmother" for Dr. Cat's Helping Handbook and my deck of images called "Shadow and Light: Images of Change and Transformation for Women in Recovery."

With longtime inspiration, Ram Dass (Breitenbush 1989).

Teacher and former Dean of Fairhaven College (WWU), Kenyth Freeman--special mentor and dear friend since 1974.

One of my favorite heroes, author and warrior Andrew Vachss.
